What to Do When You Have the Winter Hair Blues?

Dry winter air can ravage your hair.
Dry winter air can ravage your hair.

The holidays are over. Life is slowing down and getting back to normal. You may have noticed a change in your hair. It may appear dull, frizzy, tangle more easily, or worse, fall out! All of these lead to frustrating moments during your daily routine. Cold, dry air and wind can wreak havoc on your hair, stripping it of moisture and leaving it vulnerable to damage. Fear not, we have the perfect remedy to help you combat those winter hair blues! Let's go over the challenges and solutions to get your locks looking lovely again.

Flyaway hair

Dryness creates static electricity, causing hair to stand on end, making it unmanageable, and leading to winter hair blues!

No worries! We have a quick, easy fix. Rub a dryer sheet over your hair. Problem solved!

Dry Hair: Symptoms

Dullness

Hair can appear less vibrant due to dehydration and buildup. The lack of shine of the accessory you wear everyday can also lead to winter hair blues.

Brittleness

Dry, weak hair can become brittle, making it more prone to breaking and split ends.

Extra Tangles

If you find you have a harder time brushing out your hair because it's knotted, it may be due to dry, damaged hair with raised cuticles, creating a rough surface that snags other hair strands and tangles. Ouch!

What To Do For Winter Hair Blues

To treat dull, brittle, tangled hair, first, slow down. Be kind to your locks! Take extra time to remove the knots carefully. Rushing while brushing will break your hair and hurt you, too!

First, while your hair is dry, use a wide-tooth comb, a WetBrush, or your fingers to gently remove the knots. Make sure to get all of the knots out before wetting or washing your hair. Wet hair is much more easily damaged.

Treatment

You should either start using a hair mask or use it more frequently. If this doesn't help, try adding a leave-in hair oil serum. If left untreated, your hair will become damaged, and you will need to trim the ends or possibly more length.

Other treatment

Using a humidifier in winter can add significant moisture to your tresses. Just be sure to clean it regularly and keep refilling it.

Scalp Concerns

Dry scalp

Dry scalp occurs when moisture is lacking, leading to tight, itchy skin and small, white flakes. It's often due to cold, dry weather, unlike dandruff, which is caused by excess oil.

The best remedy is a scalp treatment serum. You can try an over-the-counter treatment, or add it as a service to your next hair appointment. I really like Clubman Pinaud Light Castor Oil + Hemp Oil. is a lightweight hair and scalp conditioning treatment for all hair types. It is designed to boost hair thickness, quench dryness, and promote stronger, shinier hair.

Hair Loss/Shedding (TE)

Rarely, and in more extreme cases, a dehydrated scalp can weaken roots, leading to more hair falling out in the shower and when brushing. Telogen Effluvium (TE) can be a little scary, but your hair will start to grow back in 3-6 months. If your scalp gets dry and itchy, it's best to take care of it before it becomes a bigger problem.

Products To Cure Your Winter Hair Blues

If your winter hair needs more than a dryer sheet to manage, take these steps.

First, start using a hair mask or use it more frequently. I've recommended It's a 10 Miracle Hair Mask for years. It's a great product. Recently, I discovered Joico Defy Damage KBOND20 Power Masque. It's a little thicker than It's a 10. It smells terrific, and works fantastically to add moisture, shine, and strength while being safe for color-treated hair. Plus, it's sulfate and paraben-free.

Still need to add more moisture and shine? Try Bokka Abyssinian & Kendi No Frizz Oil Serum or Moroccanoil Serum.

Other Precautions
  • Wearing a hat or scarf can help shield your hair from the harsh winds and cold air, preventing moisture loss and reducing the risk of damage.

  • Consider reducing the frequency of heat styling tools, as they can contribute to further damage during the winter months. Instead, opt for air-drying your hair whenever possible. Make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

  • Get a humidifier. By adding moisture to dry indoor air, you help moisturize your hair and skin and it can even improve your sleep!

By addressing these challenges with the right strategies, you can ensure that your hair remains healthy, vibrant, and beautiful throughout the winter season. Say goodbye to the winter hair blues!
